How do I know which service I need?

As an individual client, my job is to train you as the best coach I can, combining knowledge from all these areas. You don't need to "choose" a service between EP, S & C, or PT - just call it coaching.

The big practical difference for clients is that for an AEP, you may be able to access rebates through Medicare (via an EPC plan) or Private Health Insurance (check your Extras policy). I'll work through this with you.

This also applies to small group training and remote coaching, just in different formats that may suit you better.

I'd like to dive deeper - can you explain more about these terms?

Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology (EP) refers to the science of applying exercise to complex/chronic health conditions, though EPs also train in general exercise as well as injury management. It's a fast-growing allied health specialisation requiring a Masters degree and professional registration. EP is the highest qualification of exercise professional in Australia. You'll often see "AEP", which is Accredited Exercise Physiologist - this simply indicates their registration is current.

Strength and Conditioning

Strength and conditioning (S & C) refers to exercise applied to sportspeople and athletic populations, with the goal of improving performance in their activity. S & C isn't a protected term, which means anyone can call themselves a "S & C coach"; however, there is a professional body with various levels of training and registration for coaches.

Personal Training

Personal training (PT) refers to people performing exercise under the supervision of a trainer, usually individually but sometimes in small groups. Again, it's a broad term, but the industry has become more regulated with time. In Australia you need a Certificate IV to work as a PT, and that qualifies you to train "apparently healthy" people, meaning those without significant physical or medical conditions.

Small Group Training

Small group training just refers to the format, with a few people together under one coach. This is used by EPs, S & C coaches, and PTs.

Remote Coaching

Remote coaching refers to a coach and cilent working together virtually through technology. A growing area, this can overcome barriers of location or travel. It typically involves a mix of video calls, video/text messaging, and software that both the client and coach use.
